WELCOME

MR-5-01I am honored and enthusiastic as I begin my term as president of PABJ. I am
committed to increasing diversity in newsrooms and ensuring fair coverage of the
Black community.

Started by a group of trailblazing pioneers in 1973, PABJ is the nation’s oldest
organization dedicated to the development of Black journalists and the founding
chapter of NABJ.

The theme of my term is “Black Vigilance.” Freedom of the press is under attack and
viewed with suspicion as some belittle or discount factual news reporting. How to
stop digitally spread fake news, and the use of Twitter as a personal attack medium
are of great concern. How do journalists deal with Social Media posts that might – or
might not – be official government policy?

During my tenure our goals will be to build the next generation of warriors through
mentorship, increase the chapter’s visibility through community service and quality
programming, and build alliances with other journalist organizations.

I encourage you to recommit your involvement in PABJ. There are multiple
committees that need your help, including Media Monitoring, Membership,
Fundraising, Bylaws, and Election.

We welcome your feedback to ensure that we support these goals throughout the
year and assist in our members’ professional development.

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings. So, from the new
executive board and myself, thank you for your continued support, enthusiasm, and
commitment to PABJ.
Best,

Melony Roy
